Tarapith Temple, also known as Maa Tara Mandir, is a renowned Hindu pilgrimage destination located in Tarapith, near Rampurhat in Birbhum district, West Bengal. Dedicated to Goddess Tara, one of the ten Mahavidyas in the Shakta tradition, the temple is recognised as an important centre of Shakti worship and Tantric spiritual practices.

Situated near the Dwarka (Dwaraka) River, Tarapith attracts devotees from West Bengal and other parts of India. It is particularly associated with the spiritual traditions of Maa Tara, Shakti Peetha worship and the Tantric saint Bamakhepa. According to Hindu religious tradition, Tarapith is associated with the story of Goddess Sati and Lord Shiva. After Sati's death, Lord Vishnu is believed to have divided her body, with different parts falling at sacred locations that became known as Shakti Peethas.

Tarapith is traditionally associated with Sati's third eye, although accounts of its classification as a Shakti Peetha or Siddha Peetha vary among religious traditions. These associations are matters of religious belief rather than independently established historical events.

Maa Tara and Sage Vashistha

Religious legends associate Tarapith with Maharishi Vashistha, who is believed to have performed spiritual practices dedicated to Goddess Tara at this sacred location.
