About Us
Shobhabazar Rajbari, also known as Sovabazar Rajbari, is one of Kolkata's best-known historic royal residences and a major heritage destination in North Kolkata. The palace is associated with the Shobhabazar royal family founded by Raja Nabakrishna Deb. West Bengal Tourism describes the Rajbari as one of the oldest standing royal houses of Kolkata.
The Durga Puja at Shobhabazar Rajbari was started by Raja Nabakrishna Deb in 1757. The historic Puja is associated with the early development of Kolkata's aristocratic Bonedi Bari Durga Puja tradition. Government tourism sources note that the grand Puja began in the aftermath of the Battle of Plassey, while historical accounts record the presence of prominent British officials at the celebration.
The Rajbari's Thakurdalan and Nat Mandap, together with its historic courtyard and palace architecture, form the distinctive setting for the Puja. Unlike modern theme-based community pandals, the attraction here is the continuation of a traditional family Puja within a historic heritage residence.

Heritage Bonedi Bari Durga Puja
The principal attraction is the traditional Puja itself, rather than a newly constructed theme pandal. Visitors can experience Durga Puja within the historic Rajbari setting, including the Thakurdalan, Nat Mandap, courtyard and traditional palace architecture.
Historical Highlight
Started in 1757 by Raja Nabakrishna Deb, the Shobhabazar Rajbari Puja is now more than two and a half centuries old. A current 2026 Puja listing describes the 2026 edition as its 270th year.
