Kankalitala is a historic Hindu pilgrimage destination near Bolpur in Birbhum district, West Bengal, and is traditionally regarded as one of the 51 Shakti Peethas. The temple is located on the Bolpur-Labhpur Road beside the Kopai River, around 9 km from Bolpur town. West Bengal Tourism identifies Kankalitala as one of the country's 51 Shakti Peethas. 

According to Hindu tradition, a part of Goddess Sati's body fell at Kankalitala. Different traditional accounts describe the fallen part as the skeleton or waist, which is reflected in the name Kankalitala. The presiding goddess is traditionally known as Devgarbha, while Ruru Bhairava is regarded as the Bhairava associated with the Peetha. 

The Kankalitala area is also recognised as a place of religious and cultural importance by the Birbhum District Police, which describes it as one of the 51 Shakti Peethas and a major Hindu pilgrimage destination. 

History & Religious Significance

The religious history of Kankalitala is primarily rooted in the Shakti Peetha tradition and Hindu mythology rather than a precisely documented historical founding date.

According to the traditional account, after Sati's self-immolation at Daksha's yajna, Lord Shiva carried her body. To stop Shiva's destructive grief, Lord Vishnu used the Sudarshan Chakra, and parts of Sati's body are believed to have fallen at different locations across the Indian subcontinent. These places became known as the Shakti Peethas. At Kankalitala, tradition associates the site with Sati's kankal, or skeleton/waist. 

The temple's principal deity is known as Maa Devgarbha, and Ruru is the associated Bhairava. 

The 2011 Birbhum District Census Handbook also records Kankalitala as a sacred pithasthan, noting that temples and a holy pond had developed there and that the site had become a centre for pilgrimage and tourism. 

Kankalitala Temple & Kunda

One of the distinctive features of the temple complex is the sacred Kunda, located beside the temple.

Traditional belief associates the stones submerged in the Kunda with the sacred presence of Sati. The Kunda is an important part of the religious landscape of Kankalitala and is visited by devotees along with the main temple. 

The temple complex also includes the shrine associated with Ruru Bhairava.

By Train

The nearest major railway station is Bolpur-Shantiniketan Railway Station. Bolpur is connected by regular railway services with Kolkata and Howrah. 

From Bolpur station, local transport can be taken towards Kankalitala.

From Santiniketan

Kankalitala is a popular destination to include in a Santiniketan sightseeing trip. It is located a short road journey from the Santiniketan area.
