Guskara Smashan & Ratanti Kali Temple | 300-Year-Old Ratanti Kali Temple in Guskara, Purba Bardhaman

Guskara Smashan & Ratanti Kali Temple is a historic Kali temple in Guskara, Purba Bardhaman, West Bengal, associated with the traditional Shakta and Tantric heritage of the region. The temple is believed to be around 300 years old and was established by the Siddha Tantrik Rataneshwar, who is also associated with the cremation-ground setting of the temple. His samadhi is located on the northern side of the temple premises. 

The temple's central deity is Maa Ratanti Kali, worshipped in a distinctive form. The sanctum houses the four-armed deity standing on Shiva's chest on an elevated altar over a Panchamundi Asana. According to published accounts, the traditional Ratanti Kali Puja takes place on Magh Krishna Chaturdashi, with the image made from straw and clay each year. 

The temple remains an important religious destination in Guskara. West Bengal Tourism has also included Ratanti Kali Temple in its Guskara-area heritage and cultural tour itinerary, alongside places such as Chongdar Zamindarbari and Dariyapur Dokra village. 

According to published accounts, the newly prepared Ratanti Kali image is worshipped for seven days and subsequently immersed in the nearby Kunu River. The framework is then brought back to the temple, where the deity's and Shiva's faces are recreated for year-round worship. 

Historical & Cultural Significance

The temple's history is closely connected with Guskara's old cremation-ground and Tantric traditions. According to local historical accounts, Siddha Tantrik Rataneshwar practised spiritual disciplines at the old cremation ground approximately three centuries ago and established the deity on a Panchamundi Asana. 

Later, the Chongdar family became associated with the temple's management and worship traditions. The temple is also connected with the wider heritage circuit of Guskara.
